WHAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT

students at MLK Day of Service22nd Annual MLK Day of Service Draws 1,000 Volunteers

From assembling care kits for area food pantries to crafting pet toys for shelter animals and preparing sandwiches and casseroles for local homeless agencies, more than 1,000 volunteers showed up for a “day on” at ĢƵ’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 19.

“We know what Dr. King stood for. He stood for racial equality, human rights and so much more. He stood for all nationalities to be able to sit at the table, elbow to elbow and to work together. To be kind to one another. And to give back to the community and to help others in need. And this is what these projects are all about,” said Shawn Cooper, chair of the Day of Service planning committee.

The volunteers — including ĢƵ students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as local business and community members — participated in 34 service projects in Galloway, Atlantic City and Hammonton in memory of the late civil and social rights champion.

“As an Anchor Institution in South Jersey, ĢƵ is deeply rooted in the communities we serve,” said President Joe Bertolino to the volunteers. “Your hands and hearts are building a better South Jersey and bringing our Ethic of Care to life.”

ĢƵ’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program has been awarded a $185,000 grant from the Bacharach Foundation that will allow the university to enhance its existing facilities into a state-of-the-art research laboratory.

“This generous grant from the Bacharach Foundation represents a transformational investment in our program at a critical moment,” said Pat McGinnis, the chair of the DPT program and a professor of Physical Therapy. “Our students will have access to the cutting-edge equipment and teaching innovations to position them as leaders in the field, and our faculty will have the platform to expand scholarly productivity and drive innovation in patient-centered care.”

McGinnis said the grant funding will support the purchase in 2026 of advanced equipment, such as gait analysis and balance assessment systems, diagnostic ultrasound, electromyography (EMG) technology, blood flow restriction training systems and exercise testing tools.

In addition to research advancements, the project emphasizes experiential and inclusive learning, including simulation-based education. The grant allows for the purchase of Community Action Poverty Simulation Kits that will immerse students in the realities of living in poverty and how to approach these challenges when working with clients.
