Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ-owned vessels are designated by the United States Coast Guard as Oceanographic Research Vessels (CFR 46 Subchapter A part 3) and maintained to the standards set forth.  In addition to state and federal maritime laws, authorized Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ vessel operators comply with the University’s Marine Operations Standard Operating Procedures.

General Boating Safety

³§³Ù´Ç³¦°ì³Ù´Ç²Ô’s Marine Operations Standard Operating Procedures (MOSOP) generally follow, to the extent practical, the guidelines established in the Scientific Boating Safety Association (SBSA) Program Guidelines. The University is both a member of the Scientific Safe Boating Association and the University National Oceanographic Laboratories System (UNOLS). All passengers are required to complete the on-line safety briefing in addition to the mission-specific pre-departure crew familiarization programs that are conducted by the vessel operators prior to departure.

Cold Water Safety

Hypothermia is a concern when working in water or on deck in cold temperatures.  Learning the signs of hypothermia, prevention, and how to respond to or assist a person who is experiencing signs of chilling is an important skill in field operations.

Shallow Water Safety - non-diving activities

Participation in activities that require snorkeling or submerging the head underwater (non-diving activities) carry the potential for ‘shallow water blackout’.  Learn more about the risks associated with breath holding and complete the briefing for shallow water safety.

Working with Vertebrate Animals-IACUC

Work with vertebrate animals at the University is overseen by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).  Any student or faculty member working with vertebrates at the Marine Field Station and/or during field operations must complete training to meet the standards and requirements of IACUC.

Look for training modules under "CITI Training Links and Documents."
