Marine Operations ─ Safety & Training

Marine operations support every aspect of our coastal science teaching and research programs.  Creating a safe and productive learning environment is a team effort. Every passenger aboard our research vessels plays an important role in supporting a strong culture of safety.

Safety Resources

Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ’s marine operations team oversees the planning, coordination, and execution of activities required to safely and effectively support the University’s teaching and research programs related to coastal sciences.  These activities include cruise planning and logistics, vessel operations, instrument and equipment deployments, technical systems management, and most importantly, safety and risk management.

Certificate and Credentialing Programs

The goal of Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ’s safety programs is to eliminate and/or reduce risk to our students, visitors, employees, community and physical assets.  In the spirit of safety and direct-to-job skills training within the academic program, the marine operations team provides instructional programs that deliver technical, marine operations, and safety skills through a variety of certificate and credentialing programs.

Scientific Boating Safety Association

The University is a member of the Scientific Boating Safety Association and has adopted the Motorboat Operator Training Course as the requirement for vessel operations and as a training program for students interested in coastal science careers with an emphasis on marine operations.  Successful completion of this program will be required for all Ä¢¹½¶ÌÊÓƵ vessel operators and will be offered to interested students beginning in 2027.

Marine Technology Society

The University is an approved provider of the Marine Technology Society Microcredential Program and offers stackable credentials in Remotely Operated Vehicles, Sonar Technology and Deck Operations.  These credentials close the gap from academic programs to direct-to-job skills by providing the necessary skills and proficiencies that align with technical requirements common to many blue economy jobs.  For more information please e-mail MFS@stockton.edu.
